Old Hollywood Glam Styled Shoot – Frauenthal- Muskegon, MI

Old Hollywood Glam Styled Shoot

For the bride and groom that would like a bit more drama to the look of their wedding day, this old Hollywood Glam styled shoot is sure to inspire.  The Frauenthal Center in Muskegon, MI provided the perfect backdrop for this all-out, glamorous endeavor.  Pulling together 15 of the area’s top vendors, Cassie of White Dress Events helped pull the vision that Brenda of Brenda Hoffman Photography had for this shoot.  Utilizing in the colors of white, gold and black throughout we aimed to show the discerning couple that over-the-top décor can still be classy and refined.

With the historic old theater so conveniently located, we join forces to bring together the theme of Old Hollywood Glam with the gold, black and white color palette. The black floor provided the wonderful anchor for all the gold items.  From gold flatware, chivari chairs, gold sequin linens, statement-making gold urns and candelabras and numerous vintage pieces the style was complete with no detail left out.  Even a vintage mirror and frames were used for the gold sealed escort cards.  All the gold was anchored nicely with the black rimmed place settings and the black back-ground invitation suite.

The groom donned a classic black tuxedo and the bride was adorned in a sleek gown by Kenneth Winston fit for the red carpet. While fabulously elegant, the gown was also comfortable enough for the bride and groom to enjoy a break on the round settee in the beautiful theater lobby.   A vintage veil, headpiece and necklace added extra softness for a ceremony.  Even the jewelry was vintage with a 3ct antique European cut diamond.

For the photo shoot, Ryke’s created 3 custom cake designs. To keep the display visually interesting, we played with dimensions and sizes among the different designs. We kept within the color palette of black, white, and gold while adding some more detailed and glamorous elements, like the gold sequins and the rosettes. It was so much fun to get to play with the Old Hollywood theme and come up with ways to keep the cake designs classic and elegant but also unique.

Marci and Walt Tie the Knot

The day had finally arrived for Marci and Walt to get married.  We met a year and a half before and quickly became friends.  I can still remember the day.  We chatted like we had known each other for a long while and I distinctly remember giving Walt a “high five” as some time during our meeting.  It was a great fit!    We did their Fireman themed engagement session and Marci even helped me run my booth at a bridal show.  To say that I was excited to photograph their wedding was an understatement!

The historic Frauenthal Theather was their chosen venue and we had the run of the place for the day.  Since trusted me and allowed plenty of time for bridal party photos, there really was no stress as we took in the grandeur of the facility.  With the ceremony in the theater and the reception up in the ballroom, it was an easy transition for all involved.  The great team of vendors also made the day such a wonderful success.  I cannot say enough how helpful Rachel from White Dress Events was throughout the day.  Communication was clear and everyone knew where they had to be when, which is such a blessing.  Her assistant Becky even made sure my assistant Sara and I had food.  True team players!

The rest of the team rocked as well!  The food was great, the cupcakes and cakes were nummy, the dance floor was full, the decor was on point and the bride looked fabulous with great hair and dress!  Sure does take a lot of people to pull off an epic wedding…but oh, so worth it!

Here’s a video of their day:

I wanted to get a few of those posted to share in the joy that we experienced yesterday.  I haven’t cried so much at a wedding in a long time.  These two people, surrounded by their family and friends, vowed before God to love each other for the rest of their lives.  There sweetness and tenderness with each other just overflows and anyone around them can’t help but notice and smile broadly in response.

Thank you, Wynn and Ellie for allowing me to be part of your day! To be notified when the full gallery goes live, please visit:  Coggin Wedding

High School Sweethearts Wed

Cody and Allison dated in high school.  Went to separate colleges but remained friends, then came back together as a couple, realizing that they were  made for each other.

Their day started off a tad gray and we wondered if they skies were going to pour down rain at any moment.  But shortly before the ceremony the sun peeked through the clouds and shown through the stained glass of Holy Cross Lutheran church, lighting a wonderful colored display at the front of the sanctuary.

Donning her Converse sneakers, Allison made her way down the aisle on her own (more on that later) to her awaiting husband.  Yes, I said husband.  Cody is in the USAF (hence the uniform) and the two eloped several months before to make the transition into married military life a bit easier.  The wedding was to allow family and friends to celebrate their marriage with them before heading off across country.

After the ceremony, we went out to a lovely park that Allison had picked. It was dotted with the loveliest of purplish flowers and make a perfect setting for their portraits.  Though, while we were there, the skies became more and more threatening and we even heard a rumble of thunder or two.  On the way to the reception the sky became darker and darker but held off letting go of the buckets of rain until after the bridal party was able to make their grand entrance…phew!

Lots of fun was had at the reception with the shoe game, cake cutting, bouquet & garter tosses, bride & groom first dance and mother/son dance.  The bride also danced with each of her two brothers who stood in for her father.  That part made this photographer cry like a baby and I was very honored to be able to capture it.  During the general dancing the dance floor was overflowing the ENTIRE night!

We stepped outside for a brief few moments in the sprinkling rain and came up with their lovely final portrait for the evening and then back inside for more dancing.  The night finished with a sparkler exit in which about half way down, Cody grabbed Allison and pulled her into a huge dip and kiss.  It was epic!

Thank you Cody & Allison for letting me be part of your day!

Alex & Stephanie’s Formal Black & Red Wedding

With a touch of quirkiness!

Alex & Stephanie went all out with their formal black & red themed wedding.  The thought put into all the details astounded me.  From the red kissing balls that lined the aisle for the ceremony to the very dramatic centerpieces for the ceremony and every little detail in between, everyone could tell that  a lot of thought and planning went into pulling off their elegant affair.

But they had hints of quirkiness tossed in for good measure.  The bears sitting in front of the bride and groom at the head table were one thing.  The dinner was grilled chicken and…burgers!  How fun is that!  They also had glow sticks for their dancing guest’s fun and enjoyment.

The day started bright and wonderful for late September wedding.  The sun was shining and it was just warm enough but not too warm.  The ceremony included honoring relatives that had passed, a sand ceremony and some very touching vows written by the couple.  The reception had a really fun version of the shoe game and of course dancing, cake cutting, bouquet and garter tosses.  We finished out the night heading to the same gazebo where we started the day and took some romantic night photos.

The culmination of it all ended up in their massive, wonderfully story telling, black, leather bound album.  Thank you Stephanie & Alex for allowing me to be part of your day!

Guests with Cameras At Weddings

Guests with Cameras At Weddings

Big Cameras, Tablets, Cell Phones…Oh My!

How to be Good Guest with a Camera at a Wedding

There’s no denying we live in a digital age. Nearly everyone comes to a wedding with a camera of some sort. Whether you’re an extreme enthusiast with a dSLR and multiple lenses or have the latest iPhone in your purse or pocket, it’s nearly expected that numerous people will be photographing parts of the day. While this seems like it would be a good thing, oftentimes it really isn’t. This has gotten so intrusive in some cases that couples have opted for “unplugged” weddings. That is certainly one solution. Another solution is to embrace the social and digital times and make the very best of it and even having a specific hashtag for the day. #katieandmarksbigday

Helping Without Hindering

By embracing some helpful instructions you can be part of the photographic team, rather than a hindrance to the professional the bride and groom have hired.  (Yep, I said hindrance!) Which, I am certain is NOT the goal you have when you pull out your camera or cell phone. J

There is a big difference between the hobbyist and the hired pro for the day. Although I must say I have seen some incredible shots taken with a smart phone! Remember though, the couple has invested considerable time and money into having professionally captured wedding images. Do you really want to be the reason that some of those don’t turn out? What do I mean…”don’t turn out”?  Well, in their enthusiasm to capture the day, guests often either get in the way of the hired professional or interfere with the work he/she is doing.

Real Talk About Getting In The Way

  • As the bride comes down the aisle or as the moment of the “first kiss” of the newly married couple is about to happen, you place your arm out into the aisle to capture that moment without anyone’s head in the shot. What you may not realize is that the professional is likely behind you with a long lens (so as not to be intrusive) and you have just placed your arm in their field of view! Even if you are standing at the back of the aisle to capture the bride as she goes down the aisle, you often end up in the photograph of the professional…standing out in the scene because everyone else is seated.
  • You also may get so very excited that you get up and move around during the ceremony to get the shot you want. Remember, there is already a pro doing this. Do you really want to be an extra distraction to the ceremony?
  • Another way you may inadvertently hinder the professional’s work is by hanging out behind or near the photographer when the formal portraits are being taken. “Why?” you ask. You certainly aren’t in the field of view if you’re behind the photographer, right? While this is true, you are in the field of view of every single person in the bridal party or family grouping. Naturally, you know what they’re going to do? They are going to look at you! I have discarded numerous bridal party and family photos because not everyone was looking in the right direction. It’s bad enough trying to get everyone without blinking, but adding in their eyes looking in another direction can make a whole series of photos useless to the bride and groom.Guest with arm in aisle

Don’t Be Discouraged, Though!

But don’t be discouraged! You certainly can still take photos at weddings, photos that will add to the memories for the couple. Look for what others are missing and capture that memory. I encourage you to capture grandparents and little people. Capture photos of tables of friends gathering together to celebrate the day. There are lots of things to capture on the big day. Join my team and we’ll capture some awesome memories for your loved ones together, but in different ways and from different perspectives!
